when people find out that i am a photographer, they always ask me what i take photographs of.
i often have trouble giving an answer that satisfies their actual question.
i am not a commercial photographer.
i do not photograph objects or scenes.
i do not take traditional photographic portraits.
i photograph emotions.
i am an artist and i have found a system within photography – cameras, film, scanning, printing, traditional and digital technologies – that allows me to maximize the feelings that i long to convey. specific combination’s of high speed film, pinhole and lens cameras and printing techniques allow me to achieve a richness and texture, an ethereal and nostalgic quality that helps me to express the emotions that i need to deal with in my work and in my life.
i studied art, photography, and the history of art at the university of north carolina in charlotte and at the pratt institute in brooklyn, new york.
clearly, i love all things related to cameras & film. photographically, my dream is to master the art of wet plate collodion. i also plan my days around meals. the food network logo is practically burned into my television screen. i enjoy gardening, but not weeding. i love to talk about mountain biking, but i don’t quite have the same feeling about actually going uphill. i am learning to ski because it is all downhill. i have a secret desire to become a professional golfer after only one lesson.
